Presented by the NSW Institute of Psychiatry and the NSW Transcultural Mental Health Centre Cross-cultural Mental Health Care in General Practice is a 1-day skills based workshop for GPs.
The Workshop aims to enable GPs to develop practical skills and knowledge in providing mental health care to patients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. It focuses on building better therapeutic relationships, and will provide an understanding of common mental health disorders as they present in general practice, with a specific focus on cultural issues. It also covers working with interpreters; mental health problems among refugees and asylum seekers; ethno-psycho-pharmacology; consumer and carer perspectives and cross-cultural mental health services and resources.
At completion of the workshop GPs will be able to:
- Conduct a cross-cultural mental health assessment
- Demonstrate the ability to work with interpreters
- Describe a consumer and carer perspective
- Detect potential mental health problems among refugees and asylum seekers.
