NEW – QUICK LINKS TO CLEARINGHOUSE UPDATES
Clearinghouse staff are constantly adding new entries to our databases of multicultural health information, and we have now added an easy way to find the most recently added information. Go to this page, http://www.dhi.gov.au/clearinghouse/new.aspx and you’ll see links which automatically retrieve new records in the Resources, Services, Projects, Education and Events databases. Use these links to quickly scan for new items across all subject areas and information sources which may be of interest.
NEW – IMPROVEMENTS TO TRANSLATED INFORMATION SEARCH
We’ve also introduced a new feature on the translated information webpage. This page lists over 50 languages and selecting one will search for health information which has been translated into that language – a quick way to see all the available information in a given language. We’ve now added a function to narrow your selection by subject using the drop-down boxes at the top of the screen. Simply select a language and a subject and click the search button – for example you could search for the subject “aged care” and language “Italian”, or any other combination of language and subject.

CROSS CULTURAL HEALTH CARE IN THE NEWS
The challenges of providing culturally appropriate health services were recently highlighted in a feature article in the Washington Post – noteworthy because it is rare for the issue to get such attention in the mainstream press. The article by Susan Levine is called “Reshaping Bedside Manner in a Diverse World: Immigrant Patients Challenge Medical Field to Adapt to Cultural Differences” and can be read online:

HEALTHY EATING AND LIVING IN AUSTRALIA: INFORMATION TO SHOP WELL, EAT WELL AND FEEL WELL
NSW Refugee Health Service and Sydney West Area Health Service Refugee Nutrition Project have developed a pamphlet for refugee communities in 3 community languages. The pamphlet provides an overview of nutrition information, and has been adapted from similar resources developed by the Victorian Foundation for the Survivors of Torture and Trauma.
The pamphlet is available in English (halal and non halal versions), Arabic and Farsi/ Dari. Hard copies can be obtained from the NSW Refugee Health Service: ph. 87780770. The pamphlets will also be available in audio format (on a CD rom), in Dinka, Assyrian, Somali and Krio languages.
In addition, the SWAHS Refugee Nutrition Project has trained Bilingual Community Educators to provide a 5-week course on food and nutrition issues for four identified refugee communities.
Should you require any further information regarding these resources, or the Refugee Nutrition Project (SWAHS), please contact either Janet Cousens (9840-3768) or Ruth Das (8778 0770).
