TOWARDS A HEALTHY NATION
The Australian Multicultural Foundation, Diversity Health Institute and South Australian government is hosting the 'Towards a Healthy Nation' conference, which will explore health issues for a diverse community in Australia including:
- Youth issues
- Mental well-being and social connectedness
- Policy and health care improvement
- Ageing, including dementia, aged care facilities, HACC and
carer issues
- Cultural safety and cultural competence in health care
The conference will be held on 30 and 31 October 2006 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Adelaide. For further details, go to the Clearinghouse events database.
NEW ABS PUBLICATION: Migration, Australia 2004-05
The Australian Bureau of Statistics released ‘Migration, Australia 2004-05’ on 29 March 2006. This publication brings together statistics on international migration into and out of Australia, interstate migration within Australia and information on overseas-born residents of Australia.
Between 1996 and 2005, of the 50 most common countries of birth, people born in Sudan had the largest average increase (28% per year), followed by people from Afghanistan (12%) and Iraq (10%).

NEW GAMBLER’S HELP SERVICE IN VICTORIA
The Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health (CEH) in Victoria has received a contract to provide an Integrated Statewide Gambler's Help Service for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities. The aim of the service is to support community development activities for CALD communities, facilitate culturally appropriate counselling and provide a link between mainstream Gambler's Help services and ethno-specific and community organisations. Currently, CEH is in the first phase of the service, the aim of which is to develop a strategic plan for the duration of the service.
