The Transcultural Mental Health Centre’s (TMHC) Crisis Support Line is activated as required when adverse events (local or global) occur which may have emotional and mental health consequences for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. The Crisis Support Line has previously been activated to support CALD communities following September 11, the Bali bombings, the earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean, the 2007 Middle East crisis and more recently during the natural disasters in Burma (Myanmar) and China.
The service is part of the TMHC core business in responding to global events that impact on CALD communities living in NSW. The 24 hour line has proven to be a highly effective early intervention initiative, which responds to individual and community psychological distress following natural disasters/adverse events by offering culturally and linguistically relevant advice and counselling support to individuals and communities as required. The hotline is available to provide support for members of the affected community living in NSW who may be affected by the natural disaster.
The service has at its disposal over 160 TMHC sessional workers who are utilised for telephone counselling if needed, or who provide subsequent face to face counselling and assessments.
