Summary of Achievements 2005-2006
- The establishment of the Global Health Council.
- Support of affiliated projects of Global Health Council members including:
- Participation with Westmead Hospital and the Children's Hospital Westmead in Taskforce meetings in Vanuatu to assess health service needs and to develop a twinning agreement with the Vanuatu Ministry of Health. A scoping exercise was conducted to identify pathology screening needs. A submission was developed for the World Diabetes Foundation to provide a Diabetes Care Service in Vanuatu.
- The NSW Breast Cancer Institute (www.bci.org.au) International Research Fellowships co-badged with the Global Health Institute
- Support of the International Youth Conference to be held in November 2006 (www.youthhealth2006.org). The Conference is being held by the Centre for Advancement of Adolescent Health (www.caah.chw.edu.au) and the Department of Adolescent Medicine at the Children's Hospital (www.chw.edu.au).
- Global Flour Fortification Initiative (http://www.sph.emory.edu/wheatflour/index.html).
- Senior management from over 50 organisations in leaders group with an executive management team chaired by UNICEF, a communication group, training and technical support group and small staff. Development of a strategic plan to accelerate mandatory flour fortification in 14 countries. Fortification of flour achieved in Iran, Sudan and Yemen.
- Australia & New Zealand Flour Fortification Initiative
Establishment of Australia and New Zealand Leaders Group
- Support of the "Going with Grain" Forum conducted by the Australian Health Policy Institute, University of Sydney
- An article was prepared by Professors Glen F Maberly and Fiona Stanley on folate fortification and published in the Medical Journal of Australia (article pdf)
- Advocacy initiatives including development of a Communique endorsed by Leaders' Group and presented to all State Health Ministers across Australia prior to Ministerial Council meeting.
- Global Health Symposium "Working across borders: Sharing Expertise in Diversity Health in Local and Global Settings. Theme: Women's and Children's Health. Held 25 May 2005 with approximately 150 representatives from health, government and community sectors. (symposium report pdf)
- Support of MPH student from Emory University for placement at the Global Health Institute to research Australian attitudes to flour fortification.
- Collaboration with the University of Sydney, Research Institute for Asia and Pacific to organise a number of education programs. This has involved networking with representatives from a number of Provincial Health Services from China for delegations from: Qing Dao, Fujian, Chizhou City and Tianjin Medical University.
