  • Professor Glen F Maberley
MBBS, B.Med. Sci (Hons), MD, FRACP
    Interim Director

Professor Maberly is an Endocrinologist was his clinical career highlights included, Clinical Superintendent in Medicine, Westmead Hospital, Staff Specialist and Director of Endocrinology and Metabolism Department, Westmead Hospital.

Glen Maberly's career public health started as a medical student volunteering in Borneo, Malaysia. He was impressed with the size and frequency of goiter and asked the question "why did this still exist in 1972?" He moved forward to do clinical studies and then animal, cellular and molecular level research on the consequences of the problem and how it responded to treatment or prevention. Working in a multi-disciplinary team in China, he helped define the problem of iodine deficiency in terms of loss of brain function and reduced cognitive capacity. He demonstrated that iodine deficiency did not just occur in isolated endemic zones, but affected the whole country.

It was not enough, however, just to know such important knowledge of the magnitude of the problem. Thus the next phase of his career was dedicated to advising and advocating what this meant to policy makers, politicians and key leaders in private society. Amongst all the opportunities he had, the experience of the elimination of iodine deficiency in China stands out as an achievement he was very closely associated with (more than 80 visits since 1982). He worked with many on the science, defining the public health implications, advocating and promoting change, preparing for the 1993 Advocacy Meeting in the Great Hall of the People, and seeing all the important parties come together. China has increased salt iodization from less than 10% to over 90% in a sustainable way. This led the way to working on the national and global scene, bringing in the salt industry partners to join with public sector partners, and through activities associated with Salt2000, be a founding Board Member of The Partnership to Sustain the Elimination of Iodine Deficiency.

His public health career has focused on building public-private-civic sector alliances to support the elimination of micronutrient malnutrition with a special focus on food fortification. Professor Maberly was the founding Chair of The Department of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University. This Department has grown to be one of the mostly highly recognized departments within schools of public health in the USA and the world. He was also the Director of the Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition (PAMM). This program trained over 600 multi-disciplinary participants from more than 60 countries to develop national program to address vitamin and mineral deficiencies. He founded the Flour Fortification Initiative, collaboration amongst 50 high level leaders from pubic, private and civic organizations around the world to move flour fortification in roller mills from 19% towards a goal of 80% by 2008.
