SWAHS Health Care Interpreter Service (HCIS)

Women’s Health at Work (WHAW) program
A NSW Health program funded to address workplace and health issues for women from CALD backgrounds in workplaces where they are frequently marginalised and isolated. The program researches, plans, develops, implements and evaluates projects. Current projects are addressing the broad and complex issues of resettlement and employment for women of Ethiopian, Ghanaian, Liberian, Nigerian, Sierra Leonian and Southern Sudanese backgrounds. Previous projects have focused on Chinese Women working in Market Gardens across the Sydney Basin and their OH & S issues.

Baulkham Hills, Holroyd, Parramatta Migrant Resource Centre (BHHPMRC)
A community based, non-profit organisation established to promote the wellbeing of migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants from non-English speaking background (NESB) living in the Baulkham Hills, Holroyd and Parramatta LGAs. The MRC uses specially trained workers to assist migrants and refugees make greater use of local community and government organisations to solve their immediate needs. The MRC also liaises with other ethnic community groups to provide an ethno-specific service to a specific community. These workers provide casework, group work and conduct information sessions to clients in their own language.

Blacktown Migrant Resource Centre (BMRC)
An independent, community based organisation that directly assists migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants in their settlement or at other critical times of need, to relieve poverty, suffering and distress, and empower people irrespective of their ethnic, cultural or religious backgrounds to equally participate in Australian society. Blacktown MRC has expanded its services to include community liaison and advocacy, multicultural consultancy advice, and target groups Sydney-wide, including emerging communities, young people and older people.

Nepean Migrant Access Inc (NMA)
Provides support, information sessions on settlement issues, classes, social events, casework and a Multicultural Aged Day Care Program for migrants and refugees in the Penrith and Hawkesbury Local Government Areas. Casework is also provided for migrants in the Blue Mountains LGA. Several bilingual workers coordinate programs in community languages and some community development work is undertaken by funded project workers based at NMA and in partnership with other local services.
