CALD Consumer Advocates

How can consumer advocates help?

The role of CALD consumer advocates is very diverse and skilled.

CALD consumer advocates understand the Mental Health Act and what it means in terms of your rights and responsibilities. They have been trained in advocacy and are able to help you speak up to make sure your ideas and concerns are acknowledged and acted upon by your health worker.

CALD consumer advocates are trained as bilingual group leaders and community educators so they can either explain complex health information to you in plain English directly or organise for specialists to provide this to groups of people.

CALD consumer advocates connect people, they provide support, a confidential listening ear, recovery tips and a role model and cultural guidance for how people can adjust and manage various mental health conditions in an ongoing way.

CALD consumer advocates provide a critical quality feedback role in assisting mental health services to develop and be more family orientated and culturally friendly to people with limited English.
