How do mental health services help people in Australia? Mental health services assist people to:

  • Learn how to manage a mental health condition that is ongoing.
  • Learn compensatory skills so they can heal and recover from a mental illness.
  • Provide support to carers or partners of someone who is in the process of healing and recovering.
  • Provide care for people who are acutely ill.
  • Help preserve the resilience that people may have to start with so that they can remain mentally well

As well they also provide education, support and training to the public and other parts of the health system. Specialist services are also available that help groups such as refugees and people who have experienced the mental trauma of war or geographical disruption due to famine, flooding or other circumstances.
