Mental Health Wellbeing and Migration

Mental health and wellbeing and migration

In Australia we live in a complex society that is very culturally diverse and rapidly changing. Our mind and body are connected and our physical and mental well-being is constantly being challenged by changing circumstances and experiences. Our ability to adjust and stay well differs for each of us. The thoughts, feelings and behaviour of families, and of individuals within families may have been affected by:

  • traumatic experiences we may have had prior to coming to Australia
  • feeling lonely, isolated and grieving for our lost friendships and family when we are trying to settle into a new place
  • being exposed to violence, humiliation or bullying, cultural clashes, racism or discrimination
  • hormonal influences and sleep deprivation
  • injuries we may have received that can affect our brain
  • conditions that may be associated with our genetic make up
  • substance misuse or side effects of different medications
  • confusion, forgetfulness and memory problems associated with slowing of our abilities as we age
  • conditions that cause chronic pain
  • mental illnesses that affect our moods, thoughts and perceptions
Mental illness can happen to anyone

Emotional pain, suffering and distress can happen in any family and this can lead to distress for our loved ones and the person affected. Mental illness may affect our ability to care for our children, our partner, our elderly family members and ourselves. It does not matter where you were born or what your cultural background is, it can happen to anyone.
