Mission Statement

To work in partnership with mental health services, consumers, carers and the community to improve the mental health of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living in NSW.

The goals of the TMHC are to:

  • work closely with NSW Health, particularly the Centre for Mental Health, and with other key partners, in promoting and developing mental health policies, programs and services which ensure access and equity of service provision for people from CALD backgrounds

  • promote partnerships with consumers, carers, non-government organisations and mental health service providers in the planning, management and evaluation of mental health services to ensure the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services for people from CALD backgrounds

  • establish partnerships with mental health, health and other service providers across NSW, including rural, regional and remote areas, to assist them to develop skills in caring for the mental health of people from CALD backgrounds

  • enhance the skills and capacity of mental health professionals, in providing culturally appropriate assessment, diagnosis and treatment for people from CALD backgrounds

  • support ongoing research into the mental health and service needs of people from CALD backgrounds and into the evaluation of mental health services and programs to assess their effectiveness in meeting these needs

  • enhance community resilience among people from CALD backgrounds through mental health promotion and community education initiatives which are sensitive to their cultural values, practices, language, religion and spirituality

  • provide a specialist and multidisciplinary tertiary level clinical service to people from CALD backgrounds to complement and assist existing mainstream mental health services.
