The Transcultural Mental Health Centre offers a free statewide clinical consultation and assessment service to a wide range of professionals providing mental health care for children, young people, older people, and families of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds living in New South Wales.
The Centre also acts an entry point into the mental health system for individuals and families who require assistance in accessing mainstream services.
The range of assistance includes:
- Information and consultation about mental health and culture
- Information about and referral to appropriate health and mental health professionals and services
- Clinical intervention through a pool of more than 100 bilingual mental health workers speaking 51 languages.
The bilingual workers are from a variety of professinal backgrounds including psychiatry, psychology, social work, mental health nursing and occupational therapy. Their role is to provide:
- Psychosocial, psychological and psychiatric assessments
- Family assessments
- Grief/trauma counselling
- Psychoeducation for the client and their carers
- Short-term therapy
