How does WHAW work with employed women of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds?
This depends on what the issues are for the women and their type of employment. WHAW does much of its work through projects with specific cultural and/or work type groups. For example when the program worked with women from Chinese backgrounds working on the market gardens it facilitated English language classes to be held in the local primary school which were funded and presented by TAFE Outreach. It also developed an easy to read 'health section' which was incorporated into a 'safe use of pesticides' training program.
In the Reducing Musculoskeletal Injuries Incurred by women Working in Market Gardens Project the program engaged the expertise of an occupational therapist who worked extensively with a bilingual worker and interpreter. Again most of the work was done on farms so as the women could attend and feel relaxed as they participated.
Does WHAW only work in metropolitan Sydney?
No WHAW is a state-wide program and can work with CALD background women across NSW. Work had been done with women in the regional centres of Wollongong, Newcastle, Lismore and in June 2007 the program conducted education sessions with women from African backgrounds who are working on the berry farms in the region.
